Data deck is relatively bear today
later this week will see official numbers that are likely to offer little support to the dollar
Headlines and msm “interpreters” / propagandists appear to suggest the FED, gang still under Powell’s chairmanship, is increasing odds of a sept cut. Players are obliging by increasing the odds in swaps.
Next week’s Jackson Hole appearance and yikyak by the chair himself is evoking (my) visions of a pack of lions laying, panting, watching in tall grass and eyeballing their buddies hyeans further out, circling , tongues hanging out, also waiting for the chair to do a “Policy Pivot” dance and pirouet.
IF I have to pick a side I lean toward the dollar’s downside.
XAUUSD (GOLD)
Disappointing the bulls by a failure to establish a footing above 3400.
Now dependent on 3345-50 holding as support to keep the downside in check with a big void below it,,,intraday low 3354
Upside capped while below 3380… above it needed to put 3400 back on the radar..
XAUUSD 4 HOUR CHART

Using my platform as a Heatmap shows….
… the dollar starting the week on a cautious note as markets look ahead to Tuesday’s release of U.S. CPI
EURUSD yet to shake its ficus on 1.1650
USDJPY has so far broken a 5 day pivot around 147 but remains below 148 in quiet trading with Japan closed for a holiday
GBPUSD is holding its bid following last week’s BOE split vote decision but remains below 1.35
Gold is sharply lower after failing to gain a footing above 3400
Cryptos in focus with Bitcoin sharp move up above 120,000 puts the record 123,202 high on the radar.
US stocks ate steady
US bond yields have slipped after firming to end last week
THIS WEEK’S MARKET-MOVING EVENTS (all days local)
The upcoming week in global economics will be dominated by U.S. inflation and consumer spending data, both of which will heavily influence the Federal Reserve’s September policy decision. Tuesday’s July CPI report is expected to show a 0.2% monthly rise in headline inflation and 0.3% in the core rate, bringing the annual figures to 2.8% and 3.0%, respectively. Analysts see evidence that tariffs are increasingly pushing up goods prices, particularly in autos and core goods excluding autos, even as services and housing apply some downward pressure. Friday’s retail sales report is forecast to show a solid 0.5% monthly gain, fueled by strong auto sales, Amazon’s extended Prime Day, and state tax holidays. However, economists caution that the spending bump may not last as job growth slows and prices climb.
In Europe, the key release will be Thursday’s final Q2 GDP reading, expected to confirm modest 0.1% quarterly growth and a 1.4% annual increase. While French growth benefited from inventory accumulation, trade frictions remain a central concern—especially for Switzerland, which now faces a steep 39% U.S. tariff after failing to secure a deal. Inflation remains tame in major EU economies, and industrial production for June is expected to show a 0.5% monthly drop. Meanwhile, the ZEW sentiment survey for Germany is likely to retreat slightly from July’s highs, reflecting uncertainty over trade and growth.
In the Asia-Pacific region, the Reserve Bank of Australia is widely expected to cut rates by 25 basis points to 3.60% on Tuesday as inflation cools and labor market softness persists. China’s July data—covering industrial production, retail sales, and fixed asset investment—will offer fresh insight into the impact of U.S. tariffs on manufacturing and consumption. Japan’s Q2 GDP is forecast to show barely positive growth of 0.1% on the quarter, with both external and domestic demand providing only a slight lift. Across all regions, the common thread is the drag from ongoing trade tensions, shaping central bank policy paths and near-term economic momentum.

One reason for Gold dipping
Clarification on U.S. Gold Import Tariffs
Last week, gold futures surged after news broke that U.S. Customs might impose tariffs on certain gold bars, causing disruption in trade. However, recent reports say the administration intends to clarify the ruling, suggesting some bars may be exempt. This removes a spike in demand caused by tariff fears.
Another reason
Easing Geopolitical Tensions
Gold’s appeal as a “safe-haven” asset is fading as geopolitical risks cool down. A key driver is the upcoming meeting between U.S. President Trump and Russian President Putin in Alaska on August 15, aimed at negotiating an end to the Ukraine conflict. This has dampened investor demand for gold.
And is there a correlation between Bitcoin up snd Gold down?
